Reception to Honor the 2019 Arkansas Living Treasure

The Arkansas Arts Council, a division of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, will honor LongHua Xu, of Hot Springs, as this year’s Arkansas Living Treasure during a reception 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in the Grand Lobby of the Hot Springs Convention Center.

The Arkansas Living Treasure program annually recognizes an Arkansas artist who excels in the creation of a traditional craft and who preserves and advances his or her craft through community outreach and by teaching others.

An independent panel chose Xu as this year’s Living Treasure based on his wood carvings. The panel picked Xu based on his quality of work, contributions to traditional crafts fields and efforts in community.

Xu has advocated for arts education and individual Arkansas artists for nearly 30 years. He meets regularly with other artists to share his knowledge of arts. His artwork also includes public art, including a sculpture, named “Mother Nature,” that stands outside the historic Arlington Hotel. His art is in parks, schools, hospitals and private collections statewide.

The reception is free but reservations must be made by April 22. Tickets are available online via the Arts Council website or by contacting Robin McClea at 501-324-9348 or For more information about Xu, the Arkansas Living Treasure Program or the event, call the Arkansas Arts Council or visit
